George Vincent Prauss, 34, is in the Jackson County Jail for hitting Christopher Joseph Thompson, 41, with his truck while intoxicated and abandoning him on Highway 62 last weekend.

Prauss is charged with felony hit-and-run, driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

Thompson was walking in a northbound bike lane on Highway 62 around 3am when he was hit near milepost 7. He was found lying in the right-turn lane in front of the White City Goodwill store by Emergency responders. Thompson was taken to OHSU and remains there in critical condition.

Oregon State Police put the word out about the vehicle that hit Thompson and received a tip on Monday. The vehicle, a black 1997 Dodge Ram pickup was identified and the owner Prauss was arrested.

Pedestrians are extremely vulnerable on the road, as cars are so much heavier. In many cases, pedestrians hit by cars are seriously injured or even killed. And, in many cases, the driver is at fault. While this is not always true (sometimes pedestrians cross without a crosswalk, or run out into the street, etc.), in cases where the driver IS at fault, the driver’s auto insurance should compensate the injury victim.

First, in Oregon, according to ORS 742.520, the driver’s personal injury protection (PIP) should cover the injured person’s initial medical bills and lost wages. If these damages exceed the PIP limits (usually $15,000, the requirement in Oregon), then the at-fault driver’s liability insurance should cover the rest of the damages in a personal injury settlement.
