Two Passengers Injured in Serious Single-Vehicle Rollover

Date: November 7, 2013
Location: Highway 207, Hermiston
Names: Alberto Umana, Eduardo Umana, Tulio Umana Careres

Two people were injured in a rollover accident on Thursday, November 7, 2013.

Police report that Tulio Umana Careres, 39, was northbound in a Ford F150 on Highways 207. As he was entering a left curve, he lost control of the vehicle. It traveled off the highway and rolled twice before stopping.

Two passengers, Alberto Umana, 15, and Eduardo Umana, 62, both of Hermiston, were injured in the accident. A nurse who was passing by the scene of the accident stopped to render aid. She performed CPR on Alberto Umana as they waited for first responders to arrive. Both passengers were taken to Good Shepherd Medical Hospital in Hermiston for treatment. The driver was not injured in the collision.

Alberto Umana later had to be flow to Legacy Emmanuel Medical Center in Portland for more treatment. He was reported to be in critical condition.

Police report that driver fatigue was a likely factor in the crash. Hermiston Fire & Ambulance, Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Stanfield Police Department, and ODOT all assisted in clearing the scene and investigating the accident.

We would like to express our best wishes to the two injured passengers Alberto Umana and Eduardo Umana. We hope you both have fast and full recoveries from your injuries.

When a car rolls over in an accident, the results can be catastrophic. Our hearts go out to those involved in this accident, and we hope they are able to recover quickly.

Rollover accidents usually happen in one of two ways:

  • When a vehicle, usually with a high center of gravity like SUVs, pickup trucks, and passenger vans, loses its balance and control after a sharp turn
  • When a vehicle “trips” on something: a pothole, soft shoulder, curb or guardrail and topples over

These accidents are especially upsetting because most people believe that cars are designed to be safe: to not to roll over, and to protect the passengers if they do. In some cases, where the accident was clearly caused by poor vehicle design or faulty parts, the manufacturer or distributor may be held liable.
