Cow on Interstate Causes Fatal Crash | Oregon Car Accident Attorneys
Date: September 25, 2009
Location: Interstate 84 near Baker City, Oregon
Names: Gary Glascock, Donald Hodge
Gary Glascock, 62, of Vale, was killed September 25, 2009, after a cow wandered onto Interstate 84, about 30 miles east of Baker City, causing a series of collisions.
According to OregonLive.com, the sequence of events began around 11 PM, when drivers on the interstate spotted a cow in the road. One after another, five cars hit the cow. The first four struck the cow, but were able to pull safely to the side of the freeway. When the fifth car, a Lincoln Continental, hit the animal – who was now dead – the vehicle rolled, killing Glascock.
Glascock was a passenger in a car driven by Donald Hodge, 57, also of Vale. Hodge was taken by ambulance to Holy Rosary Medical Center in Ontario with non-life-threatening injuries. Both men were wearing seat belts.
Police closed the eastbound lanes for about an hour and a half while crews cleared the wreckage. Oregon State Police are continuing to investigate the accident.
Our hearts and prayers go out to Glascock’s and Hodge’s family and friends, as well as all the people involved in this sad event. While the details of how the accident may be unclear, it is important to remember what to do in such a situation.
It is possible for the drivers and the family of the victim could sue the cow’s owner, or even a subcontractor who may have been responsible for the security of the fence.
